WAUSAU, Wis. (WXCO) – A global movement the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, it’s a day to support non-profits and money is not the only way to give.

Touted as a global generosity movement, Giving Tuesday is a time when people are encouraged to make their holiday gifts to nonprofit organizations.

“The need is always there. Whether or not it’s dollars or just giving of your time. That’s really, really important and goes a long way,” says Eric Sponholtz of Literacy Green Bay, “Giving Tuesday is a good representation of the spirit, the philanthropy spirit, of the community.”

But as many people dish out money to charities, nonprofits, and other organizations, be sure to do your research before donating.

Real charities want your donation for honest purposes, but they do not need it immediately. So if a solicitor is pressuring you to pay right away, be cautious.

Experts say to ask for more details if you are solicited for a donation. Do not open links or attachments in unsolicited charity emails, texts, or social media posts. Even if they appear real, these may be fraudulent or contain harmful viruses.

Also, avoid using unsecure payment methods like cash, cryptocurrency, apps, or money transfers. It’s nearly impossible to reverse these transactions if it turns out to be fraud. Use a credit card or write a check directly to the organization.
